Yate Squash Club with support of Avon Squash has been running a local initiative over the last few months to promote racketball in South Gloucestershire. Racketball is similar to squash and played in a squash court – but with more relaxed rules such as under arm serve with two serve attempts.
The rackets have shorter handles and the game is played with a larger bouncier ball. It’s an easier more accessible game to squash and similar in some respects to padel/ pickleball and short tennis. The overall aim is to encourage active lifestyles and improve sports participation.
There’s increasing awareness of the importance of physical and mental wellbeing and growing recognition that sport has an important role to play too. However, to make a meaningful impact, collaboration is needed to build the community partnerships needed to attract new players. For example, between local clubs, exercise centres, activity providers and healthy lifestyle promoters, to name just a few.
As the result of our attendance at Yate events such as the Ageing Better and Youth Festivals, Yate Squash Club has been able to run a number of racketball taster sessions over the last couple of months that have catered for all ages.
We’re continuing to offer FREE introductory sessions in Yate Leisure Centre. If you’d like to join-in please get in touch via our contact form.
